Students' Fluency in Speaking Ability through Storytelling
One of the most challenging aspects of speaking skill is fluency. Many
students have difficulty in speaking English because they are afraid of
making mistakes and confused about what they want to say in the class.
Storytelling as a learner-centered approach has many positive effects.
This research is conducted to investigate the effect of storytelling through
student fluency in speaking ability. It is conducted online at Pakuan
University with 15 students from the 5th semester of PBI UNPAK as
population. In this research, a pre-experimental method with three groups
pre-test and post-test is used. There are 15 students in the fifth semester
who are taken as the sample. The data are taken from pre-test and posttest.
Some steps are done to analyze the data and the design of t-test
formula is applied to get the final result. Based on data calculation, it
shows the t-test value is 16. The result of the t-test and the t-table with
the df, (14), at the significant level of 0.05 is 2.14. It shows that the t-test
value is higher than the t-table (16 > 2.14). It implies that the alternative
hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, there is an effect of using
storytelling on students’ speaking fluency.
Keywords: speaking ability, speaking fluency, and storytelling.
