The Use of Jigsaw Technique on Students Speaking Skill

ABSTRACT
Speaking is considered to be one of the most important skills that are often used in
everyday life to communicate. However, speaking English has several aspects that
must be considered. Besides that, several factors also affect speaking skill and are
commonly faced by students. Therefore, one of the techniques that can be applied
in teaching speaking is Jigsaw technique. The aim of this research is to investigate
the effect of using jigsaw technique on students’ speaking skill. The research is
conducted to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 10 Bogor. There are 34
students from class XI MIPA 4 and 34 students from XI IPS 3 which are taken as
the sample by using random sampling technique. In conducting the research,
quasi-experimental method and one group pre-test and post-test design is applied.
The writer gives two tests (pre-test and post-test) to find out the students’
speaking ability. The data are calculated by using t-test formula. Based on the data
calculation, it is found that the value of t-test is 2.13; meanwhile the value of t-
table is 1.7 at significant level of 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) of 66. It is
shown that t-calculated is higher than t-table (2.13>1.7). It means that alternative
hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Thus, Jigsaw
technique affects students’ speaking ability. The students’ speaking skill get better
after given treatments using the Jigsaw technique. Their pronunciation, fluency,
and comprehension get much better. They also become more confident in
expressing their thoughts.
