Students' Reflection Towards the Implementation of Peer Feedback in Essay Writing class
Writing is one of the important skills that students must master. At the university level,
students are required to write essays. Nowadays, the technique of the writing process
has changed in teaching writing. Teachers or lecturers apply peer feedback to students
in their writing classes. This study aims to find out students' reflections towards the
implementation of peer feedback in an essay writing class that focuses on the benefits
and challenges of peer feedback based on three aspects, namely the content, process,
and rationale. The researcher conducted research at the English Language Education
Study Program at Pakuan University in semester 6 with 18 students who were selected
using purposive sampling. This study applies descriptive qualitative research. The
instruments used were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings from
this study present the benefits of peer feedback that peer feedback improves students
writing skill in essay writing, makes them independent learners, improves critical
thinking, fosters self-responsibility, and helps them to identify the strengths and
weaknesses of their essay writing. Moreover, peer feedback makes them feel relaxed in
writing, they become active learners, build self-motivation and self-confidence. On the
other hand, the challenges they face are: limited knowledge in giving and understanding
comments, concerns about the right and wrong in providing comments, lack of
confidence in giving comments, lack of trust or doubt in receiving comments, fear of
offending friends or being rejected by friends, concerns when receiving many comments
that affect the writer’s feelings and emotions, and differences in English proficiency
level.
