Students' Difficulties in Determining

Main idea is one of the important things to consider in reading comprehension.
Through main idea, the students can comprehend the whole content of the text.
However, it is not easy to find the main idea, because the students may not be able to
differentiate between the main idea and topic sentence. When they are not able to
determine the main idea, they will not be able to comprehend the text in a whole.
This research aims at finding out the students’ difficulties in determining main idea,
and it is conducted to the ninth grader of SMP Negeri 1 Cicurug Sukabumi.
Qualitative approach is applied in conducting this research, and there are 10
respondents from two classes that are chosen to become the participants of the
research. It was found that the students still have some difficulties in determining
main idea, including lack of interest toward reading, lack of vocabulary and
unawareness of part paragraph.
