Improving Student Speaking Ability Through Gallery Walk Cooperative Learning: (a study conducted to the first grade students of smp yktb kota bogor)
Speaking is difficult for junior high students. It happens because they are afraid of making mistakes. The aims of the research is to improve students’ speaking ability through Gallery Walk Cooperative Learning. The subject of the research is the seventh grade students of SMP YKTB Bogor. The research was conducted in two cycle processes. The result of the first cycle showed that there were 9 students (28.1%) belonged to poor (≤59), 10 students (31.2%) belonged to fair (60-69), 9 students (28.1%) belonged to good (70-79), and 4 students (12.5%) belonged to very good criteria (80-89). The score average of the first test result was 61.5. It was better than the pre-score average. However, it was still under the standard score average. Students’ enthusiasms in the first cycle were quite good. The result of the second test showed that students’ speaking score increased significantly. There were only 1 student (3.1%) belonged to poor (≤59), 3 students (9.3%) belonged to fair (60-69), 12 students (37.5%) belonged to good (70-79), and 16 students (50%) belonged to very good criteria (80-89). The score average of the second test result was 76.4. It indicates that 80% students reach the standard score (75). The data of ‘on-task’ students increased into 85.95% in the second cycle and students’ ‘off task’ 14.04 %. It showed that students become more enthusiastic during the learning activities, especially when they spoke in the class. Therefore, it can be concluded that Gallery Walk has improved students’ speaking ability.
