Students Ability in Developing Critical Thinking Through Debate Technique
Speaking is the most important parts of express the idea and feeling. There are some techniques that used in speaking class. One of technique that used is debate. Debate is one of technique that used in university level. Debate has been developed education which is speaking, and this technique can encourage students’ critical thinking. Debate is conduct with two groups, which are the opposing argument and opposing viewpoint. The aim of this study is to investigate students’ ability in developing critical thinking through debate technique. Debate is an active technique that used in a class by enhancing development communication skills, problem solving and critical thinking. Through this phenomenon, the researcher is going to conduct this study through spread the close-ended questionnaire, first interview and second interview. This research took in one class, there are 22 participants who involved in this research. This research used qualitative method and descriptive analysis technique. This research applied with online questionnaire through google form and online interview in Whatsapp. The results show that based on students’ perception, debate is a good technique that used in speaking class, but some of students feel it’s hard to apply this technique. The students confess that, it’s easier to use this technique with addressing the motion first, selection the material and sources, do analyzing, giving a question and answering that shows the critical thinking. However, their perception of this technique is good to use to create the critical thinking and develop speaking skills.
