Students Strategies In Comprehending English Scientific Text
The paper entitled “Students’ Strategies in Comprehending English Scientific Text” discussed the kinds of strategies used by the students in comprehending scientific text. The aim of this research is to find out which reading strategies students used to comprehend the scientific text, such as finding out the main idea, inference, and reference. This research applied the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from documentation, questionnaire, and interview of 14 fourth-semester students in one class. The researcher analyzed the data by classifying the keywords from students’ responses, then described them to explain the main point of the data found and finally arranged the information described in order to draw the conclusion. Therefore, based on the result of the research, it shows that kinds of strategies applied by the students are, paraphrasing, elaboration, predicting, and summarizing strategy. The students actively used these strategies in reading scientific text. In addition, to make reading easier to understand, the strategies also have an indirect contribution to honoring students' critical and analytical thinking.
