Students Perceptions of Using Grammarly as on Online Grammar Checker in Skripsi Writing

This research is motivated by the large number of students in Indonesia who still
make grammatical mistakes in writing English which has been mentioned in several
previous studies. The error shows that Indonesian people need help in
understanding how to write in a good and correct English. Therefore, students need
to help checking their grammar. Grammarly as a grammar checker, it helps students
to check their grammatical errors. This study aims to identify students' perceptions
of using Grammarly as an online checker in skripsi writing for English students at
Pakuan University. This study uses a qualitative method. The data collect using
questionnaires, and interviews techniques. Respondents in this study were 23
students who met the criteria as Grammarly user. Qualitative analysis is taken from
interpreting the data by providing information and explanations. The results showed
that most of the participants had a positive perception of the use of Grammarly. The
correction from Grammarly made students know which one was correct or not.
Then, the students can evaluate their writing based on the feedbacks given. The
positive perceptions are: Grammarly helps the student identify errors, helps with
accuracy and quality in writing, and helps students understand English grammar
rules and confidence in writing. Furthermore, this application is suitable for
checking students' errors in writing. However, some of the participants agreed that
suggestions from Grammarly were not always accurate, especially for grammatical
and diction, it is not up to 100% accuracy, and many students still needed to
improve their writing even though they had used Grammarly. Therefore, the
students should still understand grammar well so they can identify whether the
feedbacks are correct.
