Students'Mistakes In Contructing Thesis Statement Of An Essay

Several skills are taught in English and one of it is writing. In writing, various types of text are taught, and one of it is essays. Essays generally have a determining sentence that will be discussed in the body paragraph called a thesis statement. However, many students have difficulties in writing a thesis statement in an essay. Therefore, this study focuses on students' mistakes in writing a thesis statement in an essay. This study aims to determine the mistakes faced by students in writing a thesis statement. In the 7th semester of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences Pakuan University. The study used qualitative methods and descriptive analysis to find out the mistakes of students in writing a thesis statement in an essay. The data was obtained by examining the thesis statements that was written by each student with a checklist document, distributing questionnaires, and interviewing several selected students. After getting and processing the data, problems were found; the lack of vocabulary that students have to write, knowledge of the use of tenses, lack of confidence in placing the thesis statement position, determining the appropriate language to make a thesis statement, and how to write well according to existing indicators.
