THE USE OF SENTENCE STARTERS ON STUDENTS' ABILITY TO WRITE A DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

This paper is entitled “The Use of Sentence Starters on Students’ Ability to Write
a Descriptive Text”. The statement of the problem in this research is “do sentence
starters affect students’ ability to write a descriptive text”. This research is to
investigate the effect of using Sentence Starters on students’ ability to write a
descriptive text. This is held at SMP NUSANTARA. The pre-experimental applies
as the method. The sample consists of 26 students by using random sampling
technique. The data is collected from two tests: pre-test and post-test. The data is
calculated to find out the t-test value and the final results. According to the data
calculation, the t-test value is 11.75 and the t-table value is 2.06 at significant level
of 0.005 with the degree of freedom (df) 25. It can be said that the alternative
hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The final result
shows that the post-test score is higher than the pre-test, it means that the use of
sentence starters has an effect on students’ writing ability.
