STUDENTS' CHALLENGES IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
Public speaking is the act of speaking which involves addressing a group of
people to convey or present messages effectively. As the course taught in
university level, public speaking equips students with preparation for actual
scenarios in future academic and professional fields that require effective
communication and presentation skills. However, students face challenges in
public speaking. Therefore, it is important to investigate the challenges faced by
students when speaking in public. Qualitative method and analysis are used in this
research. The three instruments, reflective journal, questionnaire, and interview,
are utilized to collect data in this study. The research involves 19 participants from
B class of fifth semester of the English Education Program at Pakuan University
in Bogor. Purposive sampling is used to select participants. The results of the
research show that students face three internal challenges. The internal challenges
faced begin with psychological conditions, including anxiety or shyness, low self-
confidence, lack of motivation, and fear of making error. Then, language
competence includes vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and grammar. After that,
topical knowledge consists of finding a topic and understanding a topic. In
conclusion, students encounter internal challenges in conducting public speaking.
The challenges involve both linguistic and non-linguistic indicators such as
psychological condition, language competence, and topical knowledge.
