THE USE OF MEMRISE AND DUOLINGO APPLICATIONS ON STUDENTS' VOCABULARY ENRICHMENT OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Effective language skills include a large vocabulary, which is essential
for comprehension and expression. Teachers use Memrise and Duolingo
applications as a media to teach vocabulary. Memrise and Duolingo are
online learning platform that helps student to learn vocabulary.This study
aims to determine whether there is a significant effect of using the
Memrise and Duolingo application on students’ vocabulary enrichment.
This research was conducted in the seventh-grade at SMPN 3 Cibarusah.
The researcher used a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent
control group design. Hypothesis testing uses the t-test formula, which is
preceded by a normality test and a homogeneity test. The result of the t-
calculated is 1.75 which is higher from t-table of 1.66. then Ho is rejected
and Ha is accepted. Meanwhile, the averange of the n-gain score for
experimental using Memrise application is 57.2119 is quite effective and
n-gain score for control group using Duolingo application is 48.1904
which means was low effectiveness.Thus, Memrise application affect
students’ ability Memrise application can be used as a teaching media to
improve students’ vocabulary.
