Textbook Evaluation on an esp textbook for banking students
Textbook was considered a necessary aspect of the classroom. It played an important
role to support the teaching-learning process especially for covering various English
skills need based on the learners’ specialty or occupational background This paper
analyzed English textbook used by students banking in SMK Al-Hasra. This research
focused on materials taught of English textbooks for banking students in 10th grade at
SMK Al- Hasra based on language content, skills and topics. The aim is to know
whether materials in English textbook for banking students match the principle of
ESP materials development. Documentation and interview are used to collect the
data. The instrument to analyze the textbook used checklist consisted criteria. The
method of this study was qualitative descriptive to analyze the textbook based on the
guidelines and framework presented in the available checklist of evaluation criteria.
The result indicated that the textbook was not designed based on the ESP approach
for banking students. It showed that the English textbook used was general English
that attempts to be more focus on function and communicative interactions which was
positive point from this book. Moreover, the material is not supported by terms and
vocabulary building of banking. Many of the activities were not properly designed to
achieve their purposes. In addition, they used syllabus created by the government which
contain the same material taught with those learned by other departments. Therefore,
the teacher modified some cases to meet the course objectives and encourage students
to use what they learn in their future workplace
