Students' Strategy in Note-Taking Activity To Understand Literary Text (A Study Conducted To 3third Semester Student of English Language Education Study Program in Pakuan University)
Note-taking is an important skill, activity, and tool for students to help
them recall the information as they re-read through their notes. Notetaking also helps students in organizing their notes and gather essential
information. In addition, note-taking provides several strategies for the
student to help them gain information. This research discussed the notetaking strategy used by the student to understand the literary text and
aimed at figuring out students’ note-taking strategy in understanding the
short story. The strategy in this research includes five note-taking
strategies, which are the Cornell method, outline method, charting
method, mapping method, and sentence method. Moreover, the
participants of this research were third-semester students of the English
Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and
Educational Sciences, Pakuan University. The writer uses the qualitative
study method and descriptive analysis technique. The instruments used
in this research were documentation, interview, and focus group
discussions. The result showed that students use note-taking strategies
to understand the short story. From 19 students, it was found that 53%
use sentence strategy, 42% use outlining strategy, and 5% use mapping
strategy. The finding in this research shows that the strategy in notetaking does help the student to understand and break down the content
and context.
