This study is entitled “Students’ Perspectives on the Use of Authentic Materials
Toward Their Writing Ability in Creative Writing Class”. The researcher
formulates a research question: “What are students’ perspectives on the use of
authentic materials toward their writing ability in Creative Writing class”. Utilizing
authentic materials to empower students’ writing ability has become a recent issue
in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. This study aimed to investigate
how students perceived the use of authentic materials toward their writing ability.
It was conducted a qualitative approach and a descriptive method for discussing the
data. It focused on students’ cognitive perspectives on their attitudes toward using
authentic materials in a series of writing activities. The participants of this study
were 16 students in Creative Writing class 3A. The data was gathered by
distributing a questionnaire and conducting a semi-structured interview. The results
indicate that students perceive both the advantages and challenges of using
authentic materials. The advantages of authentic materials such as infographics and
personal letters include increasing vocabulary knowledge, triggering ideas to write,
easy to develop ideas to write, being ideal for practicing writing ability, affecting
writing ability to be better, and making the writing process easier. Whereas, the
challenges of those materials include language complexity, text difficulty, lack of
pedagogical intentions, and time-consuming.
