NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION USED BY TEACHERS IN EFL
Non-verbal communication is a process of communication in which the message
is delivered with unspoken words. It is used by teachers to create more
impression for students and it will increase the message that can be conveyed by
them which can increase the enthusiasm of students to learn EFL. The research
aims to identify non-verbal communication that is applied by English teachers in
English as a Foreign Language in order to maximize the communication process
in a classroom. The researcher used a qualitative approach and descriptive
method to get the result. It was conducted by using three instrument named
observation, questionnaire and interview toward two teachers and 30 students to
get more information about the use of non-verbal communication in EFL. This
research was analyses based on the function of non-verbal communication which
has three aspects; regulating, complementing and substituting. Based on the
analysis, the researcher found out that both teachers use different gestures, tone
of voice and kinesics as a part of non-verbal communication when they teach in
class. As a result, non-verbal communication really helps teachers to
communicate in a class during EFL. It is shown that non-verbal communication
is a part of fundamental aspects of teaching and learning process.
