INQUIRY BASED LEARNING IN TEACHING ENGLISH AT SMAN 1 CITEUREUP
This research aims to investigate the way Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) applied in
teaching English subject at SMAN 1 Citeureup because it is an unusual method to
be used in teaching English subject. This research focuses on the stages of IBL
used by the teacher that consist of 5E (Engagement, Exploration, Explanation,
Elaboration, and Evaluation). Qualitative data are gained from documentation,
classroom observation, and interview. The qualitative data is analysed by
investigating the teacher’s lesson plan, transcribing the teacher’s instruction based
on video of classroom observation, describing, and classifying the teacher’s
action, writing conversation transcript, and validating those three data to the
theories of IBL. The result of the research shows that the teacher indeed applied
the IBL method using 5E stages that make students learn new materials based on
their inquiries, express their thought critically, try to solve problems, collaborate
with other students, and appreciate other’s opinion.
