This Research is aimed at investigating the correlation betwen students' mastery of past tense and their ability to write a recount text. It is conducted to the second semester student of English Student Education Study Program, Faculty of teachers Training and Educational Scienses, Pakuan University. They were chosen Because they had learned simple past tense and paragraph recount since the first semster. The data were taken from the test of masterypast tense and abilty to0 write a recount text. The resulr showed that r-calculated was 0.043, whivh was law than r-table (0.242). In oter words, the students who have good mastery of past tense might not be able to write a recount text.
